Our couples are content to just dance National comps and few do that as it is. The field is WIDE OPEN at the moment. The Top 6 is nothing like it used to be. Now is the time to plough your energies into competeing guys, not travelling around in shows all year Reply Quote

Yes it is great to take part but a very expensive comp when at the end of the day most couples know that realistically they are only there to make up the numbers!! I think many would rather do the medallist comp finals etc at Blackpool where they know they might be in with a chance of making a final and going home clutching a trophy. As for the shows, well its the difference between spending a lot of money on dancing and making a lot of money dancing! Reply Quote

Relating to the dancers taking part in the shows , it is good that they now earn money from dancing . However, the question is does this mean that they are technically professionals and therefore should compete as such ? This discussion has taken place on this forum in the past and the views were varied. Reply Quote

Not to mention and remind everyone the UK and London in particular is one of the most expensive place to live and you need to have a lot of cash if you want to dance serioulys AND live in the UK in 2007 !!! Blackpool is the home of dance and this is the most prestgious comp around so all couples should want to be involved, not only for the experience, but to watch the better couples, attend the lectures and most of all network with the right coaches! .... The trouble for the U.K scene at the moment is that there are hardly any dancers competing each week, take for example the EADA comps, once upon a time you would have 4 or 5 rounds? Granted we will have a flood of new kids within the next ten years due to the revival of dance of terrestrial t.v, but what is going to happen in between that time? Reply Quote

The British Nationals in Blackpool show us that there are at least 60 EADA amatuer couples and around the same amount in the youth section so where are they all ??? Reply Quote

Granted Blackpool is becoming expensive for most couples but in my experience cost of living in any country reflects wages in that country. Here in the Czech Republic each partner will probably be earning less than 500 British Pounds per month BEFORE Tax. from their normal employment. Some teach as they are allowed to by IDSF to increase this. Then of course they must pay for their own lessons. Thats right LESS than 500 Pounds per month. So imagine how expensive Blackpool is for them and especially when as you say the cost of the festival is the same for everyone. By the time they have paid all the festival expenses, travel, accommodation and food plus costumes costs....................... 2 months wages for each could have disappeared.!! If they want lessons with an English coach they pay the same as Englsh dancers - thats O.K. but you will understand that makes every lesson VERY expensive. Reply Quote

The problem in the UK apart from the financial aspect is there is no synergy at national level...the system does not produce couples. There is no club structure (except very few) and most of the couples are on their own without proper coaching. I wonder if this will ever change... Reply Quote
